Girl car clinic owner: ‘I can’t find a female mechanic, so I have to learn’
Patrice Banks is now a machinist and owner of a successful car clinic, but for a while she avoided routine maintenance of her car.
“I’m afraid I’ll be used,” she said. “I’m tired of feeling helpless and having to talk to a man.”
The bank, which was then an engineer at dupont, said she felt more comfortable with female technologists. There was only one problem: “I couldn’t find a female mechanic,” she said, “so I had to learn by myself.”
She attended an evening course at a technical school. “I was the only girl with a group of boys, 19,” she said. “It’s funny. I’m 31.”
Eventually, the bank left her six-figure salary as an engineer. Her at the completion of training at the same time, the couple in Philadelphia garage to work for free, and in the upper reaches in Pennsylvania in 2016 than in the women’s car clinic repair center, the center is composed of female mechanic. To make the store more attractive, she opened an adjacent manicure and hair salon.
Banks described her experience in her book, the girls’ car clinic glove box guide, and offered tips on car maintenance.
She decided to match her car shop with a nail salon.
My girlfriend and I worked with dupont during our lunch break to this particular Jiffy lube because there was a nail salon next to it. We’ll stop the car, we’ll walk next door, and we’ll finish our nails.
We just think we are the smartest man, because it is lunch, and we are to kill three birds: we are going out for lunch, we are changing our oil, we are completing our nails, I have returned to work about 45 minutes to 1 hour. That’s great. We do this every few months because we need to replace the oil.
I began to consider opening the shop. …… Woman, it’s like a chore, we hate to make our oil change – it’s always a chore, it’s always a burden. But we look forward to doing things like nails. So when I tell people, I think it would be lovely, and is the top cherry, “I have a store for women, full-service auto repair, all female mechanic!” They’re like, “wow! I thought, “and there’s a nail salon.”
Let customers feel comfortable in the store.
People came in, especially women, with this vigilance. In order for them to trust you, you must relax your vigilance. So number 1 is just listening to them and respecting their opinions. Look at them when they talk to you. …… Stand in front of them and talk to them and make sure they don’t feel uncomfortable about spending money.
Mechanics has made a lot of diagnoses from hearing, seeing, feeling and smelling. So if we can hear, see, feel and smell it, then you can. So I’ll tell you what I’m looking for, how I feel, so you can feel comfortable, and you know it’s your car. …… It’s just transparency and communication.
Does your car need regular or good gas?
The difference in gas grade is the temperature of the engine combustion gas. So, if your engine designed to burn 87, this is the normal level, if you put the high quality gas into one, you didn’t do any good thing, because the design of the engine is not in the combustion gas temperature. Now, if you have like BMW engine, this engine performance, higher performance is higher, it will need high performance gas, because of its combustion engine designed to be used in different temperature and compression engine. …
How do you know what type of gas you should have by looking at your owner’s manual? A lot of times it will be on the fuel gate. But one of the things I tell women is that luxury cars, if you have a limousine, the gas, the liquid and the maintenance costs will be higher – all the costs will be higher. Remember that. The most important decision you can make for your car is the type of car you buy.
